I will not play glamour roles - Premiste Sandhya

Sandhya gave a tremendous performance inPremisthe as Bharath’s pair and reached the heights of victory. She has also earned a great welcome in Andhra for the remake of Kaadhal in Telugu. Right now, she is acting as Jeeva’s pair in Dishyum.

Also called Revathy, Sandhya hails from Kerala. “I never expected that I would start acting at such a young age. I will not act glamorously. That role will not suit me and neither am I interested to do so. My role model is actress Shobana. I was also appreciated as Kutti Savithri. My aim is to be like that and reach even greater heights. I will not forget the year 2005 in all my life. It is this year that crowned me with a real good name by Kaadhal. Currently I am acting in Valavaan with Simbu,” says Sandhya.

Gopichand's new flick named 'Raraju'

Gopichand proved himself as a mass and action hero with the successes of 'Yagnam' and 'Ranam', while producer GVG Raju brought out nice films with love in their backdrop like 'Tholiprema and Godavari'.

Now, Udayshankar who directed a nice family entertainer like 'Kalisundam Raa' had joined these two for their latest flick, which was titled 'Raraju'.The film would be a class and mass entertainer as the film is coming up from three different people. Gopichand is likely to present a powerful and energetic character and enthrall the youth and mass in this film.

Moreover, GVG Raju who has a nice taste in bringing out good films is likely to give yet another hit with 'Raraju'. Udayshankar, who gave a super hit film in his debut venture, would surely touch the human emotions with mass elements.

The film is coming out on a novel theme and let us hopes it would be yet another big hit in Gopichand's career.

After the completion of this film, Gopichand signed yet another film under the direction of Chandrasekhar Yeleti of 'Aithe and Anukokunda Oka Roju'-fame. The film would be on a new pattern and let us hope his latest flick would also be different from routine.

After finishing both these movies, Gopichand would play hero in a film to be produced by Nallamalupu Srinivas (Bujji), which would be a commercial entertainer. Bujji who produced a blockbuster like 'Lakshmi' would make the film without compromising at any time and the latest flick would be a heavy budget film in Gopichand's film career.

Urmila joins hands with BBC to create AIDS awareness

Urmila is out to do her bit to promote AIDS awareness. This week she travels to Pune and then to Delhi with the BBC crew to interact with the public on HIV-related matters through a debate.

Says Urmila, “I’m aware that other stars have been part of BBC's Haath Se Haath Milaa campaign for AIDS but I wanted to do something different.Because of the Ganesh festival I asked by the BBC to tie up with one of the celebration organizers to conduct an open-air free-for-all AIDS debate. A local lawyer and AIDS activist Asim Sarode will be participating with me. Because I'm a Maharashtrian and a film star I'll be able to connect with the Pune audiences very well. I'll speak to them with Marathi."

The event will be recorded by BBC for telecast. Says Urmila, "I think an issue like AIDS needs to be addressed hands-on. I suggested that they film the entire process of my visiting Pune and the ensuing interaction. What's the point of roping in a known face if that face doesn't promote the cause to the hilt?"

Urmila wants the Pune event to be one of the largest debates on AIDS in the city. “They gave me choice of city. I can go anywhere, even in the South to Tamil Nadu or Kerala where I've done films. For now I chose Pune because I’m Marathi and with the Ganesh Chaturthi, people will turn out in full force."

She also adds "I think it's time more and more of us created awareness about issues that go beyond cinema. Shabanaji has been doing it for years. But most of us are too busy with our day to day work to bother with larger issues. That has to change. If you're a celebrity you better use the power to make a difference."

Chiru should do Munnabhai sequel

When Munnabhai MBBS was released, it came with no hype but made absolutely big, rocking all box offices registers. It was remade in Tollywood as ShankarDada MBBS with Megastar Chiranjeevi in the lead role. Megastar did full justice to the role speaking Tinglish proverbs with amazing ease and made new Box office records.

Here comes the perfect sequel "Lage Raho Munnabhai". In this, Munnabhai actually turns non-violent and suggests people of this new millennium to follow Mahatma's Experiments with Truth". The story is in reference with the current changing scenario of Indian Society but never interferes with the comedy running throughout the film. Today’s society which has forgotten about the sacrifices done by Mahatma will surely feel guilty but at the same time will feel patriotic after seeing the movie.

Megastar Chiranjeevi who did amazing performance in Shankardada MBBS must do “Lage Raho Munnabhai” in Tollywood and entertain Telugu audiences too. With Chiru rumored to be playing an ‘Army Major’ in his forthcoming “Stalin”, remaking “Lage Raho Munnabhai” will surely add another feather in the cap of Megastar as well as Tollywood.

Ramu brings back 'angry young man'

Filmmaker Ramgopal Varma's career, by his own admission, has come a full circle. After making waves with his debut film Shiva in 1990-91, he is ready with Shiva yet again - after 15-long years. But this time around, he confesses, Shiva is a formula film on a subject that has been done to death.

Yet, Varma feels that this film will bring the angry young man back on the Indian screen, at a time when there are too many chocolate heroes.

"After Amitabh Bachchan took that five-year sabbatical, a void was created. There was no action hero on screen and the music companies took over. That gave birth to music albums and chocolate heroes," says Varma.

The film deals with the story of a young police officer, played by Mohit Alhawat who joins the Mumbai police force and realizes that the real world is far removed from what he had been taught at the police academy.

Varma feels that Shiva is the rebel that lives in all of us, though he himself wouldn't want to be like his character.

"I am a con man. I am not Shiva. I can only make films about him," he admits.
He's convinced that the audience is ready to accept a hard-core good against evil action film even at a time when relationship films are ruling the roost.

But whether this Shiva made 15-years after its first namesake will weave the same magic at the box office remains to be seen.

It is hard to make it here without a Godfather - Actor Raja

The road has been long and winding, but the destination seems to be fast approaching. Anand, Style, Bangaram, Kokila and now Maya Bazaar – actor Raja has been busy finding this milestones. An inspired life and an interesting mind come together beautifully in the man.

Raja says; “The journey has been.. intense. I lost my mother at the age of seven, and my sisters, who were only about a couple of years older, took care of me. We lost papa when we were in our teens. When you look back sometimes, you have moments where you say ‘I’ve been through a lot’, and you see what you have achieved, and there is a sense of pride despite the profound sense of loss.”

Talking us through his life, Raja says, “I started working at the age of 16, and my first job required me to sell air curtains. When the first pay cheque came, it had Rs 600 on it! I was completely taken aback! It was definitely time to move! I started working for a holiday resort, then moved on to an airline. The airline paid me Rs 40,000 – aking’s ransom by my standards. It really took care of the bills and the commitments but I knew there just wasn’t a sense of completion within me.”

Theatre was his passion, and a course in acting seemed almost pre-ordained. He enrolled at a university in Miami, and came back with “ a lot of hope and even more zealousness!”

He says, “I had my degree and I had my street smarts. Perhaps I was a tad overconfident for reality came as a huge wave of shock. People treated actors really badly. Hitchcock knew what he was talking about when he said ‘cattle call’! Anyway, I figured Hyderabad wasn’t working for me, so I moved to Mumbai, which was a more open market.”

And things started to click. There was a perfume ad, and then there were contracts with leading ad agencies. Three music videos-for the likes of Pankaj Udhas and Gulzar, no less - a few plays, and 18 commercials later, movies started to happen.

He says, “Anand was a definite milestone, and now I am very excited about Maya Bazaar. There’s a lot I want to do, but I think I need to find a comfort zone right now.” He continues, “It’s hard to make it here without a godfather, but there are certain directors who don’t care about that. It certainly slows down progress though. You need a larger-then-life image to sell in that at the moment. But it will happen in due course.”

Vande Mataram film in 10 languages

At a time when controversy is raging over the singing of Vande Mataram, a Telugu film director has decided to shoot a multi-lingual movie tracing the history of the national song. The film is to be shot in 10 Indian languages and would take about nine months for completion, K Kalyana Chakravrthy said.

Bankimchandra Chatterjee wrote this song on November 7 1875. "The song is 130-years old and about 99 different versions have been recorded over 100 years," he said.
The "first tune version" was composed by Rabindranath Tagore in 1906, he said, adding that the song launched the freedom movement in India.

Well-known carnatic singer Dr M Balamurlikrishna is the 100th composer and singer of this song. Referring to Balamurlikrishna, the director said the singer also plays an important role in the movie acting as a ashrama guruji (teacher).

"I am trying to rope in superstar Rajnikanth and matinee idol Chiranjeevi to play the roles of the sishyas (disciples) of the Ashrama guruji," Chakravarty said.

"The movie's idea is to trace the history of Vande Mataram. It is important that big stars come foward to act in such movies. Only then people will be drawn to see such movies," he said.

The recording of the song, which is now being composed, would be completed by September 3, he said. "We want to complete the movie in 180 call sheets," he said.

Sweta records for Illayaraja after 15yrs

Singer Shweta Pandit, whose hit single "Hall re" from "Neal N Nikki" topped music charts for months, is thrilled to have recorded a song with composer Ilayaraja after a gap of 15 years. The first song of her career was also composed by Ilayaraja.

She has now teamed up with the music maestro for Ram Gopal Varma's "Shiva", a stylised crime drama, which is a remake of his directorial debut of the same name. "When I recorded a song for 'Anjali' I was a kid. I was extremely excited when I got an opportunity to work with Ilayaraja sir as a professional after so many years," Shweta told IANS.
"I got a call from Ram Gopal Varma's office and they told me, 'we are recording for Ilayaraja in Krishna Studio in Mumbai'. They asked me to come over. I felt so wonderful and excited because I was going to meet Ilayaraja sir almost after 15 years.

"This time I was singing for the heroine. It was a touching moment for me. I was really looking forward to recording with him." Shweta still remembers her first song "Anjali".

"I was just four when I sang the Hindi version of the song. But even today if you wake me up at 4 a.m. and ask me to sing the song I will remember it. It shows how finely we rehearsed that song, that it is etched in my memory permanently. It was an amazing way to begin my career. I worked for one of the greatest musical geniuses, Ilayaraja sir."

Varma himself suggested that Shweta should sing "Chor police" for "Shiva". "Ramu sir thought I should sing the Hindi and Telugu versions of the song 'Chor police', which is different from the evergreen college campus song 'Jagda ja' in the original with Nagarjuna and Amla.

"It is a fun song. Not really too much of singing but more expressions and interactions. It is a duet with actor-singer Ninaad Kamat, who was wonderful to work with. We were both nervous when we stepped into the studio but Ilayaraja sir made us feel very comfortable.

Remembering her first meeting with Varma, Shweta said: "I remember when I was recording the songs for 'Naach' in 2004 with Amar Mohile, Ramu sir asked me which was the first song of my career and I had mentioned 'Anjali' to him." However, she says "Shiva" would always be special for her.

"Ilayaraja sir taught me so much. He even sang a few Carnatic classical raags that I have not heard earlier. It was special and I'm really looking forward to listening to the audio that has just been released."

"I'll be great if we record more songs after 'Shiva'," said Shweta who crooned for Karan Johar's "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna".

"Shiva" is slated for a September release.

Padmanabham turns 75

Basavaraju Venkata Padmanabha Rao, better known as Padmanabham to generations of countless fans in Telugu cinema, turned 75 recently. He began his tryst with the tinsel world in 1943 when he was just 12, when the legendary director Gudvalli Ramabrahmam gave him a break in Maayalokam.Since then, Padmanabham traversed a long distance by acting in more than 400 movies.

“If Ramabrahmam gave me a break in films, K.V. Reddy gave me some major hits. Shavukkaru in 1949 was my first major hit, and it also gave me a footing as a comedian. The very next year, Paatala Bhairavi came along and it helped me find a permanent place in the world of Telugu cinema,” Padmanabham recalled.

Like many others of his era who had no godfathers to give them a straight lift in films, Pdamanabham too landed in Madras with only fire in his belly and a talent to sing and imitate any actor of those days. Though he worked with almost 80 directors in his long career, Padmanabham cherished most his association with Gudavalli Ramabrahmam, Ghantasala Balaramayya, L.V.Prasad and K.V. Reddy. “They were really great directrs,” he says.

Padmanabham is proud that he never aspired for any role but directos sometimes designed certain roles exclusively for him. “A comedian in those days was always one of the four main characters in a film, standing on the same level as a hero, heronine and villain. I don’t think comedians of the present era are getting the same importance,” he remarks.

The veteran finds it hard to mention any particular comic role as his most memorable one, but makes a special mention of the role of a rickshaw puller that he played in Desoddhaarakudu (1975). “It had ample measure of ‘karuna rasa’ in it and I could display the other shade of my talen,” he says. The role became famous for the song Aakalayyi Annamadigithe Pichchodannaru Naayaallu.

Padmanabham, who directed eight films in all, introduced S.P. Balasubrahmanyam to the film industry through Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna. Kathaanayika Molla, which he directed in 1969 fetched him the A.P. Government’s award.

Padmanabham fondly recalls the healthy professional relationship he had with comedians of the present generation is immensely talented but handicapped by the inept handling of comedy in general.

Presently acting in a TV serial Paatala Bhairavi, “not a remake of that old classic,” he hastens to add, Padmanabham continues to be in the best of his health, thanks to his regular yoga sessions for the last 50 years.

Will he, won’t he get into politics? : Chiranjeevi

Once again, speculation is rife about megastar Chiranjeevi’s foray into politics. On and off there have been rumours about his imminent entry, and Chiru would brush them aside as baseless. But this time around the hearsay is that it is on the cards and the reason which fuelled this rumour is, the megastar’s intention of becoming a partner of MAA television channel.

The proposal which is under scrutiny is likely to be finalised soon. This move would definitely give fillip to his political entry, opine the industry bigwigs, a la ETV which propelled late NTR into mainstream politics. Chiru’s social work has already given fillip to this speculation and even his forthcoming film Stalin is message-oriented with slight political overtones, says the grapevine. Megastar is also believed to have said that he would give some thought to it when some reporters posed this question to him. So the D-day could be after Ramcharan Teja’s filmi career is launched.

NRI to make first 3-D film on Ganesha

A Kuala-Lumpur based Indian plans to direct the first ever 3-D film on the life of Lord Ganesha for which he has reportedly done research in the past three years. "Lord Ganesha is so unique and has several stories associated with him which are not so well known," Sharad Sharan said.

Sharan, along with his script-writer wife Renu Sharan, has directed a string of award-winning soap operas for Indonesian television during his ten-year stint in Jakarta.

"Ganesha as an animated figure is a very interesting God with very unique artistic forms. I have never seen such a beautiful mythological form," he said adding that the deity is every animator's dream.

The filmmaker would use a high-tech Chennai studio, owned by Tamil Superstar Rajnikanth's daughter for the film, which will be shot using a 32 to 50 camera set-up.

A team of experts including a PhD Scholar in Vedic Science (in Sanskrit) Dr Vyas, Ramchander Sadekar, Amjad Sheikh and veteran writer Brij Katyal will pen the film's script, he said.

The film will be made under Sharan's Tarantella Pictures company that has a joint venture with Malaysian company Astro Shaw to produce six to eight feature films in two years.

The Sharans have just completed shooting "Diva", a Malay-language film with a "Bollywood touch" in it. The movie has already been touted to be a blockbuster and will open in cinemas here, Singapore, Brunei, India and Indonesia later this year.

Magadheera release soon

Kamal Haasan starrer 'Magadheera' is all set for release. Telugu audiences are fond of Kamal Haasan and most of his films, whether straight or dubbed were proved big hits.

Directed by Gautam Menon, 'Magadheera' has noted cinematographer Ravi Varma of 'Aparichitudu'-fame, while Harris Jayaraj gave six melodious tunes for the film. It sounds interesting that Harris and Gautam worked together for two musical hits like 'Cheli' and 'Gharshana'.

The film, produced by Raj Varma, has Kamal Haasan in the role of an upright cop. Director Gautam molded the film with action backdrop in a special way on the celluloid.

Kamalini Mukherjee of 'Anand' and 'Godavari'-fame is playing opposite Kamal Haasan, while Jyothika is another female lead.

Another speciality of the film is that Srihari is playing a key role of a character artiste in the film. His role has almost an equal importance to that of Kamal Haasan.

Though the film shoot faced some rough weather for some time, it is now sailing in a smooth way.

Meanwhile the music release of 'Boss' stands postponed to the 3rd of September. Initially, they were planning to release it on the 29th of this month, which also happens to be Nagarjuna's birthday.

Suspense prevails over the music release of Balakrishna's new film. There were talks that music is going to play a very crucial role in the film because the hero happens to be a musician. So, this one will be an album to watch out for.
