Monica Bedi gets 5yrs imprisonment
A court on Friday sentenced former actress Monica Bedi, the companion of deported underworld don Abu Salem, to five years imprisonment after finding her guilty of using a fake passport. She was fined Rs 500. Co-accused Abdul Sattar and Mohd. Younis were given three years imprisonment and fined Rs 500.
Bedi and Salem were extradited from Portugal in November 2005. Bedi was brought to Hyderabad to be tried in a passport forgery case. Since then, she has got little hope from courts.
After being extradited, Bedi was brought to Hyderabad to be tried in a passport forgery case her. In December, she was also taken to Bhopal to be produced in a court there in a case in which she was alleged to have got a forged passport from there.
She did not get bail even in that case and so will have to be taken to Bhopal next month to be tried in the case there. The outcome of the case against her in Hyderabad will be crucial for her to fight even the Bhopal case.
In both the cases the charge against her is that she acquired a passport under a fake name. Monica's lawyers have contended that there was no proof that she herself had applied for the passport under a fictitious name because they were issued when she was abroad.
Though Monica has repeatedly pleaded for bail, the only relief she got from the Supreme Court was that the trial in her case should be speeded up.

Gopika and Samiksha in a street brawl!
Advertisements have given our actresses an alternate profession. When we watch television these days, it is filled with lady artistes endorsing one or the other product especially the ads that promote textiles. Recently, one such ad had featured Samiksha and Gopika in a jovial mood, happily gyrating with their six yard splendour.
The advertisement had come out very well and features in the television almost everyday at least four times. But as the old adage goes, looks are deceptive. Yes, the couple was at loggerheads at the shooting due to a small incident.
While shooting Samiksha’s wig had come off and seeing this comical sight Gopika had burst out laughing much to the humiliation of Samiksha. Not withstanding this, Samiksha retorted back by trying to pull Gopika’s hair which being real did not leave her and hence she reached the floor with a thud.
The scene was very ugly with two matured young women acting in a juvenile manner. It was with much effort that the pair was separated and the shooting continued. It is sure that our artists should be trained on basic etiquettes along with acting.

Animated characters never argue
Aayo Natkhat Nandlal which hits theatres this week, stands to be India’s first 3D animated venture. The best aspect of making an animated film, according to director Aman Khan is, “Unlike live actors who argue with the director and not do a scene till they are convinced about it, animated characters do what you say without any questions asked.” Well, that’s reason enough for Khan not only to break into a smile, but also plan to make a full-fledged Hindi film.
As for the 3D animation, Aman says, “The story of Lord Krishna is so rich that we thought that the various locations and the colourful costumes would make a wonderful impact for 3D animation. Thus, we opted for it rather than make the film in 2D, which is very common.”
Aman says that it was his responsibility to give the subject ofKrishna the right amount of reverence so that both children and families would watch it. “I had to translate the visuals and imagination on paper to make it come alive,” he says.
So how easy or difficult was it to make an animated film?
“If, while making a live film, I have a cameraman who is bad at his job, I will not get the desired result. The same applies here too. If the cameraman cannot translate my imagination into a film, I will fail to get what I want. So, you need a right team for an animation film, just like you need one while making a film with live characters. The only advantage, as I said earlier, is that my characters do not argue. They blindly do what I say,” he says.
Aman reveals that Krishna was in the making for two-and-a-half-years even before Hanuman began. “The success of Hanuman only lifted our spirits and convinced us that animated films have now been accepted by the masses. As for the comparisons between Hanuman and Krishna, I would like to say that the only common thing binding these films is that they are animated versions. Still,Krishna stands to be different because it is a 3D animation film. Other than that, the story and the set up are entirely different,” he concludes.

Lata Mangeshkar turns 77
Legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar celebrates her 77th birthday on Thursday. Born in 1929 in Indore, Lata is the evergreen face of Indian music. In a career spanning over five decades, she has sung 30,000 songs in several languages.
She started her career in a Marathi film, Kiti Hasaal in 1942. Since then she has sung for almost every major Bollywood actress and is also one of the only two singers who have been awarded the country's highest civilian honour - the Bharat Ratna.
The Mangeshkar family has its roots in Goa. It’s the village Mangeshi which saw the rise of Dinanath Mangeshkar, father of Lata Mangeshkar. But today the state does not have any monument in memory of this family.
Almost three decades ago, their house there was demolished and a hall for a temple was constructed in its place.
"Her father’s mother, grandfather and grandmother worked in the temple,” said localite and brother of legendary singer Jeetendra Abhisheki, Ramnath Abhisheki.
The music researchers in Goa have expressed a deep concern over the issue. They believe that the Mangeshkar house was a heritage site and it should not have been demolished.
In fact, the houses of many other legendary artists native to Goa are also not been properly preserved. “Today people who visit Mangeshi ask about Lata Mangeshkar’s native house. But no one can show them anything,” said a music researcher, Yogiraj.

Dev Anand celebrates his 83rd birthday today
He is the evergreen star of the Indian silver screen and as he turns 83 years young, the ageless Dev Anand remembers the days gone by with a hint of emotion. "It's a hell of a span - 61 years of active life. I came to Bombay in 1943 - hardly 19 years old,” says Devsaab, as he is fondly called.
So, what keeps the octogenarian veteran fighting fit? One, he never smoked in real life and barring a few scenes, he didn’t light up even on screen. But that is not the only reason. "When I'm working I'm energetic. I get energy from work,” he says.
One of the greatest stars the Hindi film industry has seen, Dev Anand was handsome and debonair. He was the epitome of the suave, urban gentleman in his heydays. And at 83, the zest for learning has not stopped as he readies to shoot his pet project - an international film based in Croatia.
"I'm learning all the time. I want to prove to myself that I can be as good or as bad while making an international film," he says, adding, "Time flies all the time but luckily I haven't had a pause because my mind is so made I am flying with it as well. Sources insist that the makers have a huge shortage of Ileana, Prabhas’ dates which are committed in bulk to Raviteja’s Mr. Khatarnak and V.V Vinayak’s Yogi respectively.
Also, the music director Harris Jeyraj has a lot of commitments and has requested more time. Though the product could be readied by February, the producer is not likely to release it at that time, as Prabhas’ other film Yogi which releases for Pongal 2007 would be in the theatres. We have to wait and watch to see if the movie gets postponed beyond March.

Ramu has a new competitor
Ramgopal Varma’s recent release ‘Shiva 2006’ is still busy drawing blunt criticism from the audience and critics alike. It now looks as if his new film, ‘Nishabdh’ too is going to have a few problems.
Remember Sashilal Nair? Well, he was the man behind ‘Ek Choti Si Love Story’, a film about a 14-year-old boy who falls in love with a 28-year-old woman played by Manisha Koirala. The film made huge headlines when Manisha accused the director of using body-double in some semi-nude scenes.
‘Nishabdh’ is the story of a 16-year-old girl who falls in love with a man in his 50’s, played by Amitabh Bachchan. Sashilal Nair too is making a film named ‘Lolitha’, about a man who ends up having a massive crush over his adolescent stepdaughter. This one stars Jackie Shroff and Dimple Kapadia in the lead roles.
Sashilal Nair has announced that he’d release the film on the same day that Ramgopal Varma releases ‘Nishabdh’.
Ramgopal Varma’s reaction is awaited.

Sushmita's lending hand to cricketer Imran Khan
'Will serve the world and poor people if I win the title' – if this sounded like a cliché to you uttered by the beauty queens when they were being crowned, you guessed it right, yes it is. But when it comes to Sushmita, she seemed to have taken the famous tagline to her heart. Sushmita extended a helping hand to the Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan in raising funds for the cancer hospital founded by him.
She called off her shoots to be inDubai to raise funds for theShaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, which Imran has built in the memory of his mother. The hospital was built by Imran to eradicate cancer and his inspiration came when he lost his mother to the deadly disease, Sushmita stated.
Imran is planning to offer free cancer treatment to 70% of the patients in his hospital since many who are affected with cancer could not afford the expensive treatment. I am happy I rendered my help for a noble cause, Sushmita declared.
Sush attended a three-hour telecom in Dubai for two days followed by an auction dinner in which she put her painting under the hammer for the first time – not many knew that Sushmita could paint as well.
To everyone’s surprise Sushmita’s painting fetched a whopping 25 lakh Indian rupees which she donated to the funds of the hospital. She will fly to Lahore in the near future to inaugurate the hospital. Imran is obviously happy with Sushmita’s favor and offered to visit India to attend a similar program.
