Oscar fever: Three Indians in contention

From left: Gulzar, Rahman, Maya Arulpragasam and Resul Pookutty
The 81st edition of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will unfold on the 22nd of February and there is tremendous news for India. Three Indians are in contention for the coveted little trophy called Oscar.

Though 'Slumdog Millionaire' has been directed by a Britisher and has international relevance as far as the making of the film is concerned, the film carries with it good Indian talent. The film is currently making waves internationally and the very fact that it won four Golden Globe awards and ten nominations at the Oscars has given it a reputation like no other.

Well, everyone knows A. R. Rahman has been nominated in three categories (best music score and for composing two songs – 'Jai Ho' and 'O Saya'). There are two other Indians who are also in contention for the Oscars.

Famous lyricist Gulzar has been nominated along with Rahman for the song 'Jai Ho'. Resul Pookutty has been nominated for Best Sound Mixing along with Ian Tapp, Richard Pryke.

Maya Arulpragasam, a Britisher of Sri Lankan Tamil descent has also been nominated for co-writing the song 'O Saya' along with Rahman.

Three Indians and many Oscars to win. 2009 is probably the best year yet for India as far as the Oscars are concerned. And all this despite the fact that the Oscars are meant to felicitate American films and its technicians.

Way to go India….

Rs 8 cr offered for Tamil rights of ‘Arundhati’

The sensational hit film ‘Arundhati’ in which Anushka gave an extraordinary performance and produced by Shyam Prasad Reddy was released during Sankranti season. The producer himself distributed the film personally. The film earned a great demand after it achieved a super success talk. It is learnt that many distributors came forward and sought Nizam rights at Rs 12 crore. Another surprising point is that the Tamil remake rights were sought for the film for Rs 8 crores. Film industry sources say, ‘Such a high rate was not offered to any other film so far in recent times and no film had got a hype to demand such a high price. Moreover, it is learnt that Rs 4.5 crore was offered for satellite rights and Rs 85 lakhs for overseas rights too.’ Whatever it may be, ‘Arundhati’ proved the Telugu cinema’s stamina in 2009. Kavya's Diary Much Expected Film

One of the few films, that is much expected is the film Kavya's Diary. The film has the dynamic Manjula (Krishna's Daughter) and Charmee in the main role. Going by the promos it has a very up market and chic look, and one is sure the multiplex audiences would definitely like it.

The film is an experimental film, in the sense, that the relationship between the main characters of Charmee and Manjula seem to have been given much focus. The romantic angles of these characters seem to have been underplayed.

The success of off beat films like this, would definitely open up doors for small time producers to experiment with different themes in Telugu cinema, such a trend has already caught up in Tamil and Hindi cinema and one hopes that it would be the same in Telugu.

Chiru defends Pawan’s drunken act

It was widely reported in the media that Pawan Kalyan had drunk toddy on his tour of Telangana. He later danced wildly and then passed out. His drunken dance and irresponsible comments have come in for widespread ridicule.

But the PRP Chiranjeevi has been forced to defend the drunken act of his younger brother. Chiranjeevi says that drinking toddy is part of Telangana culture, so there is nothing wrong in the act of Pawan Kalyan

But what Chiranjeevi has missed completely is that Pawan Kalyan was punch drunk and It was not a symbolic act. He later danced in a fully inebriated condition and he passed out as he imbibed more than he could stand.

His stupid act should have been condemned by Chiru but he instead chose to defend it. Pawan had made a fool of himself with his mindless act. People are wondering as to what more silly acts Pawan will come up with in future.
